The State of Tennessee has recognized Leadership Decatur County as being an effective part of the county's economic development efforts. It is a vital part of our Three Star Accreditation, making Decatur County one of the communities in Tennessee ready for success and growth.
The Leadership program began in 1998 as an outgrowth of the community's efforts to present itself to the State of Tennessee and others as a modern, progressive, and capable community. After looking at some of the most successful communities across the state, it was clear that the most progressive were the ones that had the largest number of people who were informed about and involved in community development issues.
The purpose of Leadership Decatur County is to foster a leadership-training program that will develop the most valuable commodity we have in Decatur County-PEOPLE. Leadership provides the prime force for progress. Informed, committed, and involved leadership lays the foundation that is necessary for Decatur County to improve its economic climate and raise the standard of living for its citizens.
Leadership Decatur County actively solicits participants from all sectors of the community. Participants are selected on their own merits through an application process conducted by the program's Board of Trustees. Tuition for the leadership program is $225.00 per participant. Usually tuition is provided by an employer or a private sponsor. This tuition includes the classes, transportation, meals, shirts, and all materials.
The annual graduation is held on the first Thursday in November at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Paul Teague. All alumni along with County Commissioners, City of Parsons Council Members, Town of Decaturville Council Members, Town of Scotts Hill Council Members, and the Chamber Board of Directors are invited and encouraged to attend. To date, 53 participants have graduated from the Leadership Decatur County program.
