Steve Glass and Brian White with the UT Agriculture Extension Agency accompanied our class to the Panther Creek Sod Farm in Decaturville, owned by Mr. Fred Ward.

Mr. Ward gave us an overview of the sod farm and the different types of sod. It is a massive operation and very interesting. Treaty Brasher ask if there was a type of sod that kept weeds out of her flower garden. Sorry Treaty!

Our next stop was to view a logging operation in Decaturville. Gary Montgomery and his crew were working on clear cutting land for a church. What happened to chain saws for cutting trees? Who would have thought there would be a piece of machinery that cuts the tree and it falls on the ground with no problem. Technology is grand!

Steve Glass had a special measurement stick that we could calculate the height and diameter of a tree.

We all enjoyed a test to see who could calculate and obtain the correct answer on the size of a tree. Jeff Kobiske (holding the measurement stick) may have worked for a logging company in a previous life!

The class had lunch at Mr. V's with Mr. Tyrone Pulley and his grandson. Mr. Pulley has an extensive cattle operation which Steve Glass and Brian White discussed. Did anyone know that a person does not have to go to the stock market to buy cattle anymore? Cows are now purchased via the internet. It just goes to show that you are never to old to learn new things.

Our day ended at the Chamber office with Tracy Exum, Business Development Consultant, Department of Economic Development. She had a board game called Decatur County Monopoly. Brian White and Steve Glass participated in the game. Of course the team you see in the picture acquired the most property, but luckily we did not have to go to jail.

Ms. Exum gave a very informative discussion regarding bringing industries into the county and the procedure used to view our resources.
